The Tamworth Outing Club grooms approximately 5 miles of Nordic ski trails in Wonalancet using a Skandic wide-track snow machine, purchased new in 1999, which pulls a Tidd-Tech groomer that levels snow and sets tracks. One network of trails is on property owned by the Behr family and is accessed off the trail kiosk located on the Ferncroft Road. This trail network is comprised of easy to moderately difficult terrain. A second trail, to the summit of Mt. Katherine, is located on the west side of Route 113A, just around the corner from the chapel. This trail’s first mile is gradual with the final half-mile having some steep slopes, leading to fine views of the Sandwich Range.
Trails are groomed after every snow fall of two inches or more. They are great for a before or after workday workout or a family outing on the weekend that is close to home with no crowds. Trails are wide enough for snowshoeing and, especially on the Behr lot, access to ungroomed, back-country skiing on forest-service logging roads. Trail conditions after each storm are posted on the Tamworth Exchange.
Grooming these trails cost money. There is yearly maintenance of the snow machine, which pulls the groomer 600 miles during an average winter. Gas, oil and a stipend to the operator add to expenses. If you enjoy using these trails, please consider contributing to our grooming fund. Send contributions to TOC, PO Box 311, Tamworth, NH 03886.
