Cal Ripken Baseball offers supervision and coaching for baseball practices and league games to children ages 6 through 12. The season starts when the snow melts in April and ends in early June. There are approximately 65 children in the program. The participants are divided into three groups. The “Rookies” learn the basic skills of all the positions and use a batting cage for batting practice. The “Minors” work further on the fundamentals with more of an emphasis on teamwork. Key positions, such as pitchers and catchers are selected. The “Majors” are assigned positions and are taught a higher skill level. At all levels, sportsmanship, the development of self-confidence, and having fun are key elements of the program. Volunteers operate a snack shack during the games as a fundraiser for the program.
